Let’s face it – all kids have sensory needs, but does your child have either an aversion to certain sensory experiences, or perhaps they sensory seek more than the average?
Then GG Blocks is perfect.
The first ‘colour’ we chose, was actually a contrast – we chose black because being overstimulated sucks. I’d know, I’m autistic and a sensory seeker – but I have an issue with knowing when to stop, or when something is too much. We could have chosen bright Lego colours in vivid reds, yellows or blues, but we wanted our blocks to be suitable for young and old, and any style. Black is neutral and fits any décor.
These blocks are soft and beautiful to touch. I love to run my hands along them and simply feel them. They are wonderfully tactile with non-slip bases – so you can rub your hands or feet on the bases to get some extra sensory input. Laying on them, crawling over them, or knocking over a wall of them can give you that proprioceptual input that some of us just love and need to regulate.
Putting the blocks together in different configurations also gets a great deal of exercise and movement, while interacting with them in a sensory exploration of mind and body. When you’re done with your build, you can lay on them, sit on them or stand on them – they are extremely durable, and we have not found a weight they will not bear (yet). We displayed them at a secondary school, where the students tested them over and over again, jumping and standing on them. GG Blocks stood the test, and held up superbly.
While exhibiting GG Blocks at expos, we’ve found that children and adults alike want to explore the texture of the blocks as well as their ability to make any build that your imagination evokes. Adults have especially loved turning the blocks into a dark den, where they feel safe and sound in the dark cavern like interior, their comments include; “it’s so cozy in here”, or “I want one in my living room”, or “I could sleep in here forever”.
Adults have exclaimed “I could build my whole office out of these, how awesome would that be!”
Because the blocks interlock together into a very strong structure, people of all ages feel safe that the blocks won’t fall or collapse, like other building blocks or soft play equipment can tend to do. This creates a safer and more relaxed sensory environment that can reduce anxiety, increase involvement or generate better creativity.
We experimented with and trialled many different densities of the Eva foam, to find just the right measure of strength and softness, that supports rough play but is soft enough to provide a comfortable safe and fun experience.
